Jim Doyle's exit has made this one the most competitive election in the country. The State of Wisconsin has not had an open gubernatorial election since 1982. Wisconsin's political climate was about to change and not for the better. Earlier that spring, former republican governor Tommy Thompson was considering a run for state wide office. The candidates for Governor were Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker and former congressman Mark Neumann announced around July. According to a opinion poll Thompson had the highest approval rating among the three. However, ultimately Thompson decided against the run. The primary for Governor was not an easy one. There was a schism inside the Walker camp regarding the Lt. Governor post. Kelly Rindfleisch who was Walkers deputy chief of staff was working with Mark Graul and Walkers campaign manager Keith Gilkes to elect State Representative Brett Davis for lt Governor. The one small problem with that is that he was in a five way primary with Superior Mayor Dave Ross and a newscaster named Rebecca Kleefisch. According to documents obtained by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel top Walker aides had some very harsh words in describing Kleefisch. Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker and News reporter Rebecca Kleefisch both one their primaries. The DPW picked Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett who ran in 2002, but lost to Jim Doyle. Walker a retread in his own right, having a failed gubernatorial campaign in 2006. The 2010 election that was once called one of the most competitive elections is a tail of two retreads. The tea party was on the rise then, people were following the voices of conservative pundits. However their rhetoric is soon going to turn to votes. Scott Walker promised a lot during his campaign, however unlike Barack Obama's promises. His were very unrealistic, short sighted and drew skepticism from both sides of the isle. There is no way you are going to create 250,000 new jobs in four years. Scott Walker won with 52% of the vote that fall, the talking heads conjured up a tea party wave that ousted Russ Feingold and other progressives across the country. Congratulations Wisconsin, you now have an MTV star as your northern congressman, a U.S Senator who thinks its to expensive to take care of our veterans. We have a lt Governor who thinks same sex marriage is equal to marrying tables, cats, and dogs. Governor. Democrats will spent more time kicking and screaming about Walker when a good majority of them stayed home, the only voter suppression was your lack of interest. Elections have consequences 2010 was a redistricting year, this will be a tough pill to swallow.
